You Can’t Step into the Same River Twice, or How We Bought the WT9 Dynamic Again After 18 Years
Note: The author holds a PPL and 1,000 flight hours on the Dynamic.
In 2008, we took delivery of our best-in-class WT9 aircraft, powered by a Rotax 912 ULS (100 hp) engine, a Woodcomp electrically adjustable propeller, and fixed landing gear. It proved to be the ideal aircraft for everyday flying, glider towing, and cross-country trips abroad. Its elegant, aerodynamic lines translate into outstanding flight performance. In practical terms, that means arriving at your destination ahead of your friends flying other aircraft types. While they are still taxiing in, you already have your airplane parked and are enjoying your second coffee at the airport bar in Vrsar. Cruising at 200 km/h doesn’t cost any more than driving a conventional car. Over the years, our long-term average fuel consumption has been 16 litres per hour, which translates to approximately 8 litres per 100 kilometres of MOGAS. The baggage compartment easily accommodates everything a couple needs for a trip, including the heaviest items—which, in our case, are usually my wife’s cosmetics. 🙂 The aircraft’s handling characteristics are exceptionally pleasant, and despite its relatively low MTOW of 475 kg, landings in stronger crosswinds remain straightforward and safe. Glider towing is equally effortless thanks to the ample power reserve.During the entire period we operated the aircraft, we never experienced a single defect requiring repair. Reliability is undoubtedly the quality I value most in this airplane. Regular servicing certainly contributed to this, and all maintenance was carried out directly by the manufacturer, Aerospool, in Prievidza. In short, the Dynamic is a comfortable, reliable aircraft offering excellent performance and reasonable operating costs.
So Why Consider a Change?
Technology evolves, and aviation is no exception. New avionics systems have become available, airframe designs have been refined to allow higher MTOWs, range has improved, and newer, more powerful engines have entered the market.
But were those reasons enough to replace an aircraft that already met all our needs? “Absolutely not,” I told myself. Our Dynamic had everything we needed, and we never felt we were missing anything.
That changed one summer day when I stopped by Prievidza with a friend for lunch. During coffee, I was offered the opportunity to fly the latest-generation WT9 NG 600 kg MTOW, equipped with Rotax 916 (160 hp) engine.Although I still had commitments later that day, there was no way I was going to turn down the chance to try Aerospool’s newest creation. To make a long story short, I landed with a huge smile on my face. What I had just experienced was not merely a modernized version of the aircraft I knew so well. It felt like flying a rocket. The powerfull engine, cruising speeds approaching 300 km/h, and the overall capabilities of the aircraft seemed to belong to an entirely different category. Suddenly, everything became clear. This was exactly what we needed. A modern, high-performance aircraft with exceptional range and all the features contemporary aviation has to offer.
Today, we are fortunate enough to travel in one of the most advanced aircraft of its class. We can fly to the coast without a fuel stop. Travel times have been significantly reduced thanks to the higher cruising speed. We typically cruise between 6,000 and 9,000 feet in smoother air, which greatly improves comfort. And thanks to the turbocharged engine, there is virtually no loss of performance as altitude increases.
So yes, we own a Dynamic again—but in reality, it is an entirely different machine. And here is a final surprise: the total fuel required to reach our destination is actually lower than it was with the original 100 hp version.
Unbelievable.
One thing is clear: in Prievidza, aircraft are designed and built by pilots, for pilots.
